The Sofala is a twenty-one room lifestyle hotel that blends old world Portuguese-Goan charm with a stylized modern appeal. Located in a quiet street in Nerul, a short drive from the popular beach towns of North Goa, The Sofala is set apart from the hustle of Goa's touristic hotspots in its own private sanctuary on the idyllic banks of the Sinquerim River. The property has recently been refurbished to renew its guestroom interiors by legendary fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani. Another new addition to the property is the authentic Italian restaurant, Mia Cucina, that hosts live-music and culinary events throughout the year.

Ideally located away from the hustle of Goa’s tourist crowds, but a short drive away from Candolim’s buzzing streets, The Sofala sits on a quiet road in Nerul with a view of the Sinquerim River. The hotel prides itself on its excellent service and for providing a-home-away-from-home hospitality.

The Sofala is a lifestyle hotel that combines Goan-Portuguese heritage with refined cosmopolitan flair. The property houses twenty-one guestrooms and suites, a villa, two restaurants and two swimming pools- the original pool located in the centre of the hotel’s main courtyard and a newly built infinity pool with a deck terrace overlooking the historic Candolim Church. The hotel's restaurants are The Sol Bar that is open all day and the newly built Italian restaurant, Mia Cucina, open for lunch and dinner.

The Sofala's guestrooms have been recently refurbished in vibrant colours and new artwork while still boasting the property’s original four-poster beds, antique cupboards and framed historic photogravures and mezzotints of the Portuguese-era trading ports that line the walls.

Queen Guestroom -
The Queen Guestrooms are designed in a luxurious residential style, styled in a palette of warm tones combining the modern with Goa’s Portuguese heritage. The room features a contemporary layout, custom designed furniture including an intricately handcrafted queen bed, comfortable seating areas, a flat screen television, and an abundance of natural light. The marble bathrooms are fitted with rain showers and replete with designer bath amenities.

Queen Deluxe Guestroom - The Queen Deluxe Guestroom features the same amenities and design as the Queen Guestroom, but is larger in size and includes a larger seating area.

Suites - The Suites are spacious and well-appointed for complete relaxation. The open living areas feature carefully selected furniture, comfortable seating, eclectic fittings and a flat screen satellite television. The flooring is custom designed and handmade, reflecting Goan and Portuguese influences. The bathrooms have a rain shower and designer bath amenities. Most suites offer an abundance of natural light, expansive river views and outdoor balconies.

Guests of The Sofala may indulge in room service from the two in-house restaurants, or enjoy their meals poolside by one of the two swimming pools. Breakfast may be ordered in the privacy of the room, or shared with other guests on the common deck that offers a stunning view. Other Sofala indulges include spa services, designer bath products, soft high thread-count natural linens and enchanting tropical outdoor spaces.

“Mia Cucina” at The Sofala, the newest addition to the refurbished property, is set on a terrace overlooking the Sinquerim River with an air-conditioned indoor dining space as well as an alfresco outdoor area. Open all year, the restaurant benefits from The Sofala's unique location that allows patrons to reach the restaurant in a mere 5 minute drive from Candolim, while dining surrounded in nature. The restaurant offers a casual dining experience with fine quality food and excellent service for lunch and dinner.

The menu showcases authentic Italian cuisine with home-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas, vegetables, seafood and choice of meat prepared in a healthy way. Great attention is paid to the quality of ingredients and in the preparation of their homemade products such as breads, pastas, cheese and desserts.
The food here is best enjoyed the traditional Italian way, in leisurely courses, with an antipasti of delectable nibbles or fresh salads, followed by handmade pasta or gnocchi, a soup of flavour-filled broth, and main courses that feature vegetables, seafood or meats cooked with the choice of sauce. The dessert is homemade and decadent, while the espresso or cappuccino always makes for a perfect ending to a delightful meal. Specialties here include Insalata Gorgonzola, Pizza Quattro Formaggio, Ziti al Forno, Zucchini Ripiene, Pollo al Barolo, Filetto di Manzo con Funghi e Potate and Tonno Fresco al Pomodori.

“Mia Cucina”, which literally translates to “My Kitchen”, is an Italian Bistro chain with locations in Mumbai and now Goa. Sanjay Kotian, a qualified chef and restaurant consultant, is the talented owner of this brand. After launching Mia Cucina in Mumbai and a Mexican restaurant "Amigos" in Versova, he chose The Sofala hotel as the perfect location for his first restaurant in Goa.

Founded in 2010 as The Sol, this charming property was conceived by Suraj Morajkar, whose company, Sun Estates Developers, was also responsible for building the hotel. Arvind D’Souza was the architect of the project, while the interiors were designed by India’s renowned fashion designer, Tarun Tahiliani. In 2012, the management of the hotel was taken over by Boston East India Hotels; The Sol was rebranded as" The Sofala" and made a part of the Troca Collection.

Originally conceived as 4 town houses, The Sofala exudes a charming residential ambiance while boasting all the comforts of a modern luxury hotel.  For Suraj Morajkar the hotel was his dream project. “ I wanted to create a space full of luxury and warmth that makes guests experience the atmosphere and charm of Old Goa. The hotel is inspired by an age when you could hear the strum of a guitar on a quiet night, and homes were filled with the sounds of clinking glasses and conversation.”

Since the recent rebranding in 2012, Tarun Tahiliani, the hotel’s original interior designer, worked closely with the new management’s design team to refresh the interiors of the guest rooms in vibrant colour palettes and replenish it with new artwork. The revamp additionally boasts a brand new bar, an additional restaurant and an infinity pool with a terrace deck that overlooks the historic Candolim Church. With the renovation, The Sofala exudes a more cosmopolitan feel while remaining true to the hotel’s essence and original layout.

“Walking into The Sofala lifts my spirits,” says Tarun Tahiliani. “We created The Sofala as a Goan heritage design fused with delicious luxury that stares through the courtyard into the starlit sky with the palms swaying over the emerald pool! Personalised service and warmth and the Zen of the paddy fields...”
